Your Prom, Your Way – A More Comfortable Prom Dress Shopping Experience in Devon

For some people, shopping for a prom dress is something they’ve been looking forward to for years.

For others, the thought of walking into a prom dress shop and trying on dresses can feel a little daunting.

And at Catwalk Club, we understand both.

You might be confident and excited, or you might be shy, nervous or body-conscious. You may be neurodivergent, autistic or have ADHD and find busy environments overwhelming. You might never have worn a dress before. You might feel uncomfortable being the centre of attention, or you may not even be completely sure that prom is for you yet.

Whatever brings you through our door, you are welcome exactly as you are.

Sometimes You Just Need Things a Little Quieter

Not everyone enjoys a busy shopping environment.

For some of our customers, having lots of people around, music playing, conversations happening and lots of different dresses to look at can make it harder to relax and enjoy the experience.

That’s why we’re happy to help customers who would feel more comfortable with a quieter prom dress shopping experience.

And you don’t need to have a particular diagnosis or reason to ask.

You may be autistic or have ADHD. You may experience anxiety or sensory sensitivities. You might simply be naturally shy or prefer calmer surroundings.

Perhaps you’re feeling self-conscious about your body, worried that dresses won’t suit you, or nervous about getting changed and looking at yourself in something completely different.

All of those feelings are valid.

Never Worn a Dress Before? That’s Absolutely Fine.

We meet customers with completely different experiences of clothes and dresses.

Some arrive knowing the exact colour, designer and style they want.

Others haven’t got a clue.

And some have never worn a formal dress before.

If that’s you, please don’t worry. Nobody at Catwalk Club expects you to know the difference between different styles, fabrics or silhouettes.

You don’t have to know what suits you before you arrive – that’s what trying things on is for.

We can take it slowly, try different ideas and find out together what feels right.

Not Even Sure You Want to Go to Prom?

That’s okay too.

Sometimes a prom appointment happens when you’re still deciding whether prom is really your thing.

You may be coming because your friends are going. Perhaps your family would love you to go, but you’re not convinced. Or maybe the whole idea of dressing up and walking into a big event feels completely outside your comfort zone.

Coming to Catwalk Club doesn’t mean you have to buy a dress.

You can explore. You can try something completely different. You can see how you feel.

There doesn’t have to be pressure attached to the experience.

You might surprise yourself – and if dresses really aren’t your thing, that’s okay too.

Neurodivergent Prom Dress Shopping

We regularly see autism and ADHD mentioned on our booking forms, and we really appreciate customers and families sharing information that can help us make their appointment more comfortable.

Of course, neurodivergence is different for everyone.

One autistic customer may prefer very little conversation and a calm environment, while another may love chatting about every dress. Someone with ADHD might find having too many options overwhelming, while somebody else may want to see everything!

That’s why we don’t want to make assumptions.

If there is something that would help you, tell us when you book.

It could be something as simple as needing a little extra patience, reducing the number of choices at one time, avoiding particular textures, explaining what will happen before we start or simply giving you a little space.

Also TOP TIP: Book one of these slots for the absolute quietest time: 9am and 9.45am. This is when the shop is closed to the public and only those who have booked appointments are able to browse the rails and try on the dresses! Also Friday is a nice calm day as the shop is exclusively bookings only.

Feeling Body-Conscious?

Trying on occasion dresses can feel very different from everyday shopping.

If you’re feeling body-conscious, you won’t be the only person who has walked through our doors feeling that way.

We’re here to help you discover what makes you feel good, and. you will be so surprised when you start trying the prom dresses on!

Sometimes that means trying something unexpected. Sometimes it means immediately ruling something out. Both are absolutely fine.

Your Appointment Doesn’t Have to Look Like Anyone Else’s

Social media can make prom dress shopping look like it has to be a huge occasion – lots of people, lots of photographs, tears, cheering and a dramatic “YES TO THE DRESS!” moment.

It really doesn’t.

If that’s your personality and you want the full celebration, wonderful!

But if you’d rather quietly look in the mirror, think for a moment and say, “Actually, I really like this one,” that’s just as special.

At Catwalk Club, there is no performance required.

Tell Us What Would Make Your Visit Easier

If you think you’d benefit from a quieter or more relaxed appointment, please mention it when you book.

You don’t need to give us your medical history or explain yourself.

You can simply tell us:

“I’m autistic and I’d prefer a quieter appointment.”

“I have ADHD and can get overwhelmed by too many choices.”

“I’m very shy and I’m nervous about trying dresses on.”

“I’ve never worn a dress before and I’m a bit anxious about the appointment.”

“I’m quite body-conscious, so I’d like to take things slowly.”

Or simply:

“I’d feel more comfortable with a quieter experience.”

That’s enough.
