Prom Dress Shopping When You Need a Little More Space

Prom dress shopping is supposed to be exciting.

But we also know that for some people, the thought of walking into a busy shop, trying on dresses, talking to people and making a big decision can feel a little overwhelming.

At Catwalk Club, we want prom shopping to feel fun, relaxed and completely at your own pace.

So, if you’re neurodivergent, struggle with busy social environments, experience sensory overwhelm, feel anxious in shops, or simply prefer a little more privacy and space, please know that you are very welcome here.

You don’t have to shop the way everyone else does

There is no “right” way to shop for your prom dress.

Some of our customers arrive bursting with excitement and want to try everything.

Some know exactly what they want.

Some don’t know where to begin.

And some would much rather quietly look through the rails without having somebody following them around asking questions.

That’s absolutely fine.

Catwalk Club is deliberately a little different from a traditional prom boutique. We don’t normally have a member of staff hovering over you throughout your entire appointment.

Instead, we’ll explain how everything works when you arrive, then give you the freedom to browse the dresses yourself.

Our team will be around whenever you need us — but you don’t have to have constant conversation or attention if you don’t want it.

Consider a weekday appointment

If you know that crowds, noise or lots of people moving around can become overwhelming, we strongly recommend visiting us on a weekday where possible.

Weekdays are generally much quieter than our busy weekends, which can make the whole experience feel calmer and more private.

There may be fewer customers in the shop, less going on around you and generally a little more breathing space.

If privacy is particularly important to you, you may also prefer one of our Premium Suites, which are larger and more spacious and have seating for the people you’ve brought with you.

We’ll explain what happens

Sometimes not knowing what’s going to happen next is more stressful than the actual experience.

When you arrive, we’ll talk you through how Catwalk Club works.

We’ll explain our Prom Promise, show you which dresses have already been chosen for your school, explain how to browse and tell you what to do with the dresses you’d like to try.

Then you can take things one step at a time.

You don’t need to remember everything we tell you, either! If you’ve forgotten something five minutes later, just ask us again. We genuinely don’t mind.

You can browse without being followed

This is a big part of the Catwalk Club experience.

You are welcome to browse the dresses yourself.

You don’t have to explain your style to us. You don’t have to know which silhouette you want. And you certainly don’t have to know all the proper names for everything.

If you want to quietly work your way through the rails with your parent, friend or whoever you’ve brought with you, you can.

Equally, if looking at hundreds of dresses feels completely overwhelming, come and find us.

You can simply say:

“I don’t know where to start.”

We’ll happily choose a couple of completely different dresses for you and give you somewhere to begin.

We will always ask before helping you

Trying on formal dresses can sometimes require a little assistance. There are corset backs, zips, straps and layers of fabric that can be difficult to manage by yourself.

But our staff should never assume that you’re comfortable being touched or helped.

We’ll ask you first.

You might hear us say:

“Would you like me to help you do the dress up?”

or

“Do you mind if I help you with the back?”

If you’d rather we didn’t, that’s completely okay.

You can say no.

You can also bring someone you trust and ask them to help you instead.

You don’t have to make a decision that day

This is really important.

Trying on lots of dresses and then being asked to make a decision can be a lot — particularly if you need some time afterwards to process how you feel.

At Catwalk Club, there is no pressure to buy a dress simply because you’ve had an appointment.

Try them on.

Take photos and videos.

Go home.

Look through your pictures.

Think about it.

Talk about it.

And if you want to come back another day, come back.

Bring the people who make you feel comfortable

We recommend bringing no more than two guests, simply because too many opinions can sometimes make choosing a dress harder rather than easier.

But think about who makes you feel most comfortable.

Bring the person who understands when you need a minute.

The person who won’t pressure you.

The person who knows when you’re getting overwhelmed.

And the person who is going to make this experience enjoyable for you.

Your prom dress appointment should still feel exciting

Needing a quieter environment doesn’t mean you should miss out on the fun of finding your prom dress.

You can still try the enormous ballgown.

You can still try the fitted dress you weren’t expecting to like.

You can still have the photos, the reactions and that brilliant moment when you look in the mirror and think:

Oh. This might be it.

We just want you to be able to do it in a way that feels comfortable for you.

Book a quieter weekday appointment if you can, tell us what you need when you arrive, and we’ll take it from there.

No pressure. No judgement. No expectation that you have to shop in a particular way.
